Gum Disease - Periodontal Diagnosis and Therapy

Gum disease is caused by the bacteria found in plaque (a white sticky substance) and tartar (a hardened form of plaque). Signs of gum disease include tender, red, swollen gums that bleed easily.

Left untreated, the supporting tooth structure (bone) that holds the tooth in the jaw will recede as a result of the infection. The tooth eventually becomes mobile (loose). Tooth loss will then result. Periodontal therapy (gum treatment) depends on the severity of the condition.

It may be as simple as tweaking your brushing and flossing habits, or having you visit the office more frequently for cleanings

Treatment for more advanced cases may include deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) or gum surgery.

Healthy gums are crucial to having healthy teeth. Watch for early signs of gum disease like bleeding while brushing, puffy, tender, and/or red coloured gums.

Report any symptoms or gum discomfort to your dentist and get your twice yearly check-ups. Your gums can be measured and monitored during your check-ups. Potential issues can be diagnosed and treated quickly; giving you the best chance at a healthy smile in the future.
